Well Child Exam Q & A

What is a well-child exam?

A well-child exam is a comprehensive examination that focuses on your child’s overall health and wellness. Even though you may bring your child in to see Dr. Emezie when they’re sick, it’s also important to set up a well-child exam to assess health when your child is well.

How often does my child need a well-child exam?

The frequency of the well-child exam depends on your child’s age. You may need to come in to see Dr. Emezie more often for the well-child exams during the first three years, and then once a year from ages 4 to 21.

What can I expect during a well-child exam?

Dr. Emezie conducts a thorough examination when you come in for a well-child exam. During the exam, she reviews your child’s birth and medical history, as well as your family history. She then conducts a complete physical exam that includes:

  • Check of weight and height
  • Vision and hearing test
  • Measurement of temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure
  • Assessment of lung and heart health
  • Look at the ear, nose, and throat
  • Check of reflexes
  • Assessment of muscles, joints, and internal organs

Dr. Emezie plots your child’s weight and height on a growth chart so you can see how your child is growing compared to other children and if they’re following the same growth curve as they grow older.

Based on the information obtained during the well-child exam, Dr. Emezie provides recommendations to help your child maintain or improve health, which may include updating immunizations, the importance of good nutrition, and the need for regular activity.

What if my child needs immunizations?

Covenant Pediatrics is a full-service pediatric practice and provides immunizations as needed based on the schedule set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many parents have concerns about immunizations, but they’re a safe medical treatment that protects your child against infectious diseases

A well-child exam is an important tool that helps you and Dr. Emezie stay on top of your child’s health. It also helps you, your child, and Dr. Emezie establishes a trusting patient-doctor relationship that improves overall health care.
